Once again a government department has come up trumps for giving us information. This time we learn the range of the forthcoming Onvo L60 SUV from Nio.
Pre-sales of the L60 from Nio’s more mass-market Onvo brand began in May and the car is expected to be launched and delivered in September. Pre-sale prices are 219,900 yuan (30,200 USD) and the car will also be available with BaaS, which allows buyers to rent the battery rather than purchase it.
Interestingly the announcement from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) suggests that at least initially the L60 will only be available with a smaller 60.6 kWh battery pack. Previously it had been expected that the car would also be available with a 90 kWh battery pack giving a range of around 730 km.
With the 60 kWh, or more correctly 61 kWh, pack the Onvo L60 can in single motor configuration do either 555 or 525 km CLTC range. For the dual-motor version range is either 525 or 501 km. The difference in ranges is believed to be accounted for by the different sized wheels, the L60 is available with either 19 or 20-inch wheels.
From the MIIT information, we know that the battery pack only weighs 439 kg. The batteries themselves are provided by BYD subsidiary FinDreams and are the blade lithium iron phosphate battery. Energy consumption for the L60 is as low as 12.1 kWh/100 km.
Helping that low energy consumption figure is the drag coefficient of Cd 0.229 which is better than the Tesla Model Y’s Cd 0.236. Lead designer for the Onvo L60 was former Bentley designer Raul Pires. The L60’s design incorporates features such as low-drag wheels and hidden door handles.
Inside the Onvo L60 the design Is quite similar to the Tesla Model Y. Most noticeably there is only a central screen on which everything is displayed and unlike in Nio cars on the Onvo this is horizontally orientated rather than vertically. Furthermore, drive selection is by a steering column mounted stalk rather than a switch on the center console with Nio cars.
Dimensions are 4828, 1930, and 1616 mm and the wheelbase is 2950 mm. Single-motor versions will use a 240 kW motor on the rear axle and all-wheel drive versions will add a 100 kW motor to the front axle. The Onvo L60 will be produced at Nio’s second Hefei plant known as F2.
