BMW speeds past luxury rivals Porsche and Audi as EV sales spike in Q2

Who said the EV market was cooling off? Not for BMW. The luxury automaker is outpacing rivals, including Porsche, Audi, and Mercedes, as electric vehicle sales continue climbing. BMW extended its lead after EV sales surged in Q2.

BMW continues outpacing rivals as EV sales surge in Q2

As luxury rivals Mercedes, Porsche, and Audi struggled, BMW strengthened its position, with EV sales climbing 22% in the second quarter.

BMW Group delivered nearly 108,000 electric vehicles in Q2 2024. With 190,622 deliveries this year, BMW Group EV sales brand’s EV sales are up 24.6% compared to last year.

The BMW brand led the charge, with EV sales up 34% in the first half of 2024. Through the first six months of the year, the BMW brand has delivered 179,557 fully electric vehicles. Overall, BMW brand sales were up 2.3% in 1H 2024 as it continues to outpace luxury rivals.

Porsche’s EV sales plummeted after Taycan deliveries slipped 51% in the first half of the year. The drop comes as Porsche introduces the updated 2025 Taycan and new Macan Electric.

Mercedes-Benz also reported that EV sales fell 25%, with only 45,800 models delivered in Q2.

Meanwhile, although Audi’s EV sales were nearly flat in Q2, VW is considering closing its Brussels plant due to low demand for Audi’s Q8 e-tron and Sportback models.

BMW expects the momentum to continue with new EV models, like the i4 and iX2 crossover, rolling out. Looking further out, BMW plans to extend its lead with its advanced Neue Klasse EVs, including an affordable 1 Series EV, as it targets new buyers.
