Geely officially launched its much-anticipated Galaxy E5 electric SUV. This new model features cutting-edge technology, including the new Aegis short-blade lithium iron phosphate batteries and Meizuβs Flyme Auto infotainment system. The biggest surprise from the event is its official price. Price range from 112,800 to 148,800 yuan (15,760 to 20,800 USD). Before October 1st, buyers will benefit from a discount of 3,000 yuan (420 USD), reducing the starting price to just 109,800 yuan (15,300 USD). 13,200 yuan (1,850 USD) cheaper than the pre-sales price.
The Galaxy E5 boasts a floating central control screen, a digital instrument panel, and a head-up display (HUD). Premium models offer up to 16 speakers, including headrest speakers, and feature the Flyme Auto system, designed to be as intuitive as a smartphone. It is powered by Chinaβs Dragon Eagle One 7 nm CPU. Geely has introduced innovative hidden door handle technology that promises reliable operation even in extreme conditions and plans to share this technology with the industry.
The new SUV measures 4615mm in length, 1901mm in width, and 1670mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2750mm. Its curb weight is only 1615 kg. It is powered by an electric motor with a maximum output of 160kW and 320 Nm of torque, achieving a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 6.9 seconds. The vehicle offers two battery configurations: 49.52 kWh and 60.22 kWh, providing ranges of 440 km and 530 km, respectively.
The Galaxy E5 features a drag coefficient of 0.269 Cd and aerodynamic wheels with 235/50 R19 tires. Built on the new GEA architecture derived from the SEA platform, it uses CTB (cell-to-body) battery integration technology to achieve a 50:50 front-to-rear axle load ratio. This reduces weight, lowers the center of gravity, and enhances rigidity. The Galaxy E5 also incorporates Geelyβs Galaxy 11-in-1 intelligent drive system, which integrates critical components into a compact unit weighing 79.8 kg and measuring 72 liters.
The Galaxy E5 offers an interior space of up to 4.03 square meters. It features 33 storage compartments, claimed to be the best in its class. This includes extra drawers underneath the rear air vents and another below the rear seats.
The Galaxy E5 will be available in eight colors: red, pink, gray, green, white, silver, black, and blue. In early 2025, other models from the Geely Galaxy range, L7, and L6, will receive an upgrade to Meizuβs Flyme Auto via an OTA update.
Editorβs Comment:
As we tested the Galaxy E5 on last weekβs Sunday China Drive, we discussed how it is designed to rival popular BYDβs Atto 3 (Yuan Plus). E5βs dimensions and power output all outperform BYD Atto 3 by a slight margin. The top trim, now only costs 145,800 yuan (20,800 USD), offers massage seats and auto parking; together with Meizuβs Flyme Auto system, the Galaxy E5 offers an attractive package overall. The top trim of BYDβs Atto 3 (Yuan Plus) costs 147,800 yuan (20,600 USD) and has less to offer. As the RHD version is in parallel development, the Galaxy E5 will take on the Atto 3 both domestically and internationally. How BYD will react to the launch of the Galaxy E5 remains to be seen.
