BYD’s luxury brand, Yangwang, has achieved a significant milestone with its U9 supercar (see specs), which recently completed an intensive six-month testing program at the Nürburgring Nordschleife. Known as the “world’s toughest testing ground,” the Nürburgring is notorious for its demanding terrain, featuring sharp elevation changes and many tight corners.
The U9 underwent extensive fine-tuning during this period, with the Yangwang team optimizing its performance on over 70 corners and enhancing capabilities across more than 30 critical track sections. Nearly 150 technical aspects were rigorously tested to ensure the U9 could confidently take on this legendary circuit.
Building on this achievement, Yangwang celebrated another significant moment last week as the first batch of U9 supercars rolled off the production line. The facility was constructed to meet the exceptional production standards required for this high-performance vehicle, featuring advanced areas for body assembly and final assembly and a unique cleanroom dedicated to producing the U9’s carbon fiber monocoque. This cleanroom meets medical-grade humidity and temperature control standards, ensuring precision in manufacturing the U9’s intricate carbon fiber shell.
The production of the U9 is a testament to Yangwang’s dedication to cutting-edge automotive engineering. The vehicle’s carbon fiber monocoque, one of the largest in the world, is crafted using an advanced bonding technology that Yangwang has perfected over a decade.
The U9’s Yunan-X system enhances the U9’s performance. Along with the e⁴ platform, it provides stability and responsiveness in all directions. Using an 800V high-voltage platform and a 36kW high-power suspension motor, the Yunan-X system offers over 1 ton of lift force per wheel and precise responsiveness. This technology represents advanced engineering from BYD and Yangwang.
Quality control for the U9 follows aerospace engineering protocols, with meticulous inspections at every production stage. As production ramps up, Yangwang is ready to deliver these exquisitely crafted supercars to its first customers later this month. With the U9, Yangwang is not just entering the supercar market but setting a new standard for what a supercar can achieve.
The YangWang U9, priced at 1.68 million yuan (232,000 USD), accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 2.36 seconds. With dimensions of 4,966 mm in length, 2,029 mm in width, and 1,295 mm in height, and a wheelbase of 2,900 mm, it weighs 2,475 kg. It features a carbon fiber roof and rear diffuser, with an optional racing spoiler..
The U9 is powered by BYD’s e4 U-shaped motor system, which includes four motors delivering a peak torque of 1680 Nm and a top speed of 309.19 km/h. It completes a 0-400 meter sprint in 9.78 seconds and has an 80 kWh battery offering a CLTC range of 450 km. Charging options include dual fast charging, which charges the battery from 30-80% in 10 minutes, and slow charging, which takes 7 hours. The U9 also features the DiSus-X suspension and stabilization system, allowing it to drive on three wheels, jump, and perform dynamic maneuvers.
