With Sierra joining its EV lineup, General Motors (NYSE: GM)-owned GMC brand is aiming to become a leader in all-electric truck sales in the U.S. The Sierra pickup joins the electric versions of the Hummer, that includes both an SUV and a pickup and the Chevrolet Silverado that has been in dealerships in December. It is the third electric pickup that GM made.
But on its way to the top, the Sierra will have to outsell not only its Hummer sibling and the electric Chevrolet Silverado, but also rivals from Ford Motor (NYSE: F), Rivian Automotive (NASDAQ: RIVN) and the EV king, Tesla Inc (NASDAQ: TSLA).
When Tesla announced the Cybertruck, legacy automakers like GM and Ford rushed to release electric version of their pickups to prevent Tesla to dominate he electric truck market as it did with EVs as pickups are their core strength and one they cannot afford to lose. Rivian was actually the first to bring an electric pickup to the road, beating Tesla, GM and Ford. But, the EV storyline goes beyond the initial launch as even the electric version of America’s best-selling truck, the F-150, didn’t solve challenges that Ford is facing on its EV journey. The Cybertruck also brought a new set of challenges for Tesla. The electric pickup market remains at its infancy and only time will show who will be on the top of this lucrative segment.
In The Meantime, Electric Pickups Continue To Evolve
Worksport (NASDAQ: WKSP) just announced it has officially begun production of its COR Alpha portable energy system that is part of the company’s off-grid clean power-on-the-go duo, together with a solar-powered tonneau cover SOLIS. Worksport already announced a while back that the SOLIS will be compatible with the most popular pickups that include those from both General Motors and Ford, while also opening a potential window of collaboration even with Tesla. Worksport is planning the Alpha launch in September and it will include 100 COR Alpha units within North America that will be distributed to early testers, influencers and key customers, with a limited number already circulating for initial use case testing.
With smart capabilities, extreme resilience to external conditions, advanced MPPT technology, and the game-changing hot swap functionality in the Pro version of the COR, Worksport is promising superior capabilities. Envisioning a future of portable clean energy, Worksport created a powerful clean-tech nano grid with this power duo that is designed to revolutionize portable energy for both recreational and industrial applications, undoubtedly bringing electric pickups to a new level.
According to Motor Intelligence. The all-electric pickup truck market was roughly 38,500 vehicles during the first half of the year, including both retail and fleet sales. According to Motor Intelligence, Ford led the way with the electrified F-150. The Lightning was followed by Tesla and its Cybertruck with almost 11,600 units, while Hummer was last with GMC being slow to ramp up production and sales. But, by the looks of it, GM is accelerating and its confiedence is justified by its history when it comes to trucks. Once innovative accessories like those from Worksport enter the race, the electric pickup contenders will be supercharged as they continue to fight for leadership and the segment continues to grow and develop.
