On October 15, the MG ES5 pure-electric SUV made its debut, positioned as a family compact SUV, offering three ranges: 425 km, 515 km, and 525 km. It was renamed from “S5” to “ES5”. The price range is expected to be around 100,000 – 150,000 yuan (14,100 – 21,200 USD) and will launch later this year. The MG ES5 will likely be exported, the test vehicle was spotted in Europe in August.
Built based on SAIC’s Nebula pure electric architecture, the MG ES5 features a 5-link rear suspension system. The length, width, and height measure 4476/1849/1621 mm, respectively, and the wheelbase is 2730 mm. The curb weight options are 1685 kg and 1740 kg. Additionally, the official maximum usable area in the car is 4.24㎡.
In the front, the close face design is paired with slender sharp headlights and split grilles in the bottom.
Other design elements include conventional door handles, blackened exterior side mirrors, silver roof luggage racks, and Y-shape through-type lights.
Two rim sizes are provided: 17 inches and 18 inches. Power comes from a rear electric motor that outputs a maximum power of 125 kW (168 hp) and a peak torque of 250 Nm. The 0 to 100 km/h acceleration time is 8 seconds and the top speed can reach 170 km/h. Depending on the capacity of the lithium iron phosphate battery pack – 49.1 kWh or 62.2 kWh, supplied by the CATL-SAIC joint venture, the CLTC pure electric range options are 425 km, 515 km, and 525 km (assuming under CLTC conditions).
It is worth mentioning that the official claimed the battery pack thickness of 110 mm is the world’s thinnest.
Inside, the cockpit adopts the popular central control screen layout, an instrument panel, and a flat-bottom steering wheel. The screen dimensions have not been revealed at this time. The center console adopts a hollow design to provide additional storage space at the bottom, comes with two cupholders, and supports wireless charging for mobile phones.
A panoramic sunroof is also present.
