Nio 3,900, Xiaomi 5,600, Tesla 13,200, BYD 89,600

In the third week of October, week 42, China’s EV market had mixed signals. Tesla registrations were up 55%, Xiaomi increased by 20%, BYD was down 15%, and Nio decreased by 17% compared with the previous week.

Week 42 of 2024 was between October 14 and 20. Week 42 of 2023, used for year-on-year comparison, was between October 16 and 22.

The weekly sales are published by Li Auto, and despite Li’s not explicitly saying it, they are based on insurance registration data. The numbers are rounded and present new energy vehicles (NEV) sales, the Chinese term for BEVs, PHEVs, and EREVs (range extenders). To be completely precise, it also includes hydrogen vehicles (FCEVs), but their sales are almost non-existent in China.

BYD registered 89,600 vehicles, marking a 15.63% decline from the 106,200 registrations the previous week. However, year-over-year, BYD’s registrations have surged by 73.31%, up from 51,700 units. So far this month, between October 1 and 20, BYD registered 263,400 vehicles in China (including Monday, September 30).

SGMW’s Wuling registered 19,400 EVs, up 106.63% from the 9,400 units the previous year. The WoW comparison is not available.

Tesla had a strong week with 13,200 registrations, reflecting a 55.29% increase from the 8,500 units registered the previous week. Year-over-year, Tesla’s registrations grew by 62.96% from 8,100 units. Cumulative October registrations now stand at 23,500.

Li Auto saw 12,100 new registrations, a 9.70% decline from the previous week’s 13,400 units. Despite this drop, Li Auto’s registrations have grown by 34.44% year-over-year from 9,000 units. Total registrations for October now stand at 34,200.

Aito registered 8,700 vehicles, a 22.54% rise from the previous week’s 7,100 units. Year-over-year, Aito’s registrations have surged by 210.71%, up from 2,800 units. So far in October, Aito has registered 20,400 vehicles.

Leapmotor recorded 8,000 registrations, down 8.05% from 8,700 units the previous week. Year-over-year, Leapmotor saw a significant rise of 116.22% from 3,700 units. October’s total registrations reached 20,200.

GAC Aion recorded 6,300 registrations, down 8.70% from 6,900 units the previous week. Year-over-year, however, GAC Aion’s registrations dropped by 30.77% from 9,100 units.

Xiaomi registered 5,600 vehicles, a 21.74% increase from the previous week’s 4,600 units. Year-over-year data is unavailable, but Xiaomi’s total registrations for October have reached 14,000.

Zeekr registered 5,200 vehicles, a 5.45% decline from the 5,500 units registered the previous week. Nevertheless, year-over-year, Zeekr’s registrations surged by 188.89% from 1,800 units. October’s total registrations reached 14,400.

Xpeng registered 4,500 vehicles, a 15.38% rise from the previous week’s 3,900 units. Year-over-year, Xpeng’s registrations fell slightly by 4.26% from 4,700 units. So far, Xpeng has registered 11,200 vehicles in October.

Deepal recorded 4,100 registrations, down 10.87% from 4,600 units the previous week. Year-over-year, Deepal’s registrations increased by 10.81% from 3,700 units. October’s cumulative registrations stand at 11,400.

Nio saw a decline with 3,900 registrations, down 17.02% from the previous week’s 4,700 units. Year-over-year, Nio’s registrations dropped by 11.36% from 4,400 units. Total registrations for October stand at 13,100.

The Onvo sub-brand is not included in Nio brand registrations. According to CarNewsChian information, Onvo registered 933 units of its only car, the L60 SUV. That is flat from the 900 units the previous week.
