Pickup truck hits couple riding electric scooters in Fayetteville :: WRAL.com

Two pedestrians are recovering after they were hit while
crossing a busy Fayetteville intersection on electric scooters.

The pedestrians were hit before 4 p.m. Tuesday at the
intersection of Raeford Road and McPherson Church Road. The entire
incident was captured on a driver’s dash camera.

Juana Estrada was sitting in her car Tuesday waiting for the
light to change with her dash cam running. She said she couldn’t believe her
eyes.

“They proceeded to cross the street and in the corner
of my eye I saw a vehicle move and then I turned and I saw that blue truck
striking the lady, the pedestrian,” Estrada said.

Estrada said the male pedestrian jumped in front of the
woman so she wouldn’t be hit by another vehicle.

Estrada’s dash cam video shows the bright blue pickup truck
hit the people on the scooters, but what happened next is what shocked her.

“That driver, instead of stopping, proceeded to yell
something out of the window and just drove off,” Estrada said.
“Luckily somebody stopped to help out and make sure they crossed the
street safely.”

The light was green when the pickup truck drove away.

Estrada made a U-turn to check on the pedestrians and tell
them about her dash cam video. They told her the driver yelled at them before
he drove away, heading west on Raeford Road.

According to Estrada, the pedestrians said the man stuck his
head out the window and yelled that he didn’t care because the “light was
already green.”

The pedestrians, who only suffered minor injuries, walked
away after the crash. Both were shaken up, and one complained of a headache and
was waiting to be taken to the hospital.

In addition to Estrada’s dash cam video, Fayetteville police
may have captured the incident on a security camera posted at that
intersection.

“It’s scary,” Estrasda said. “It could be my
child crossing the street, it could be an elderly person, it could be a family
member … someone that you know, and the fact that this driver didn’t even
care or bother to make sure they were okay.”

The victims filed a police report, and an officer has been
assigned to investigate the crash and search for the driver.

Fayetteville police are asking anyone with video or
information about the crash to call the Fayetteville Police Department at
910-433-1529 or Crime Stoppers at 910-483-8477.
