Caterpillar, Newmont Debut Battery-Electric Truck

“As we look toward the future, our focus remains on creating a safer and more productive mining environment, and this battery-electric large mining truck is one more step we are taking to further advance our safety and sustainability commitments,” she said.

Newmont stated that surface and underground diesel combustion machines are responsible for a significant portion of Newmont’s carbon emissions.

“As the mining industry navigates the energy transition, we know a diverse set of solutions will be required for our customers to achieve their operational and sustainability objectives,” said Denise Johnson, group president of resource industries for Caterpillar.

She said Caterpillar is “excited about our collaboration with Newmont and working with them to truly understand the implementation and impact of the Early Learner 793 XE at CC&V.”

Newmont and Caterpillar plan to focus on validating and testing the Early Learner to provide insights into how mines can incorporate battery-electric large mining trucks into their operations and set a new standard for the industry, the announcement said.

Under the agreement between Caterpillar and Newmont, Newmont provided a preliminary investment of $100 million as the companies set initial automation and electrification goals for surface and underground mining infrastructures and haulage fleets at Newmont’s Cripple Creek and Victor Mine and at the Tanami mine in Northern Territory, Australia, according to a November 2021 statement from the companies.

Denver-based Newmont is the world’s largest gold producer and a partner in Nevada Gold Mines, holding 38.5%, with Barrick Gold Corp. holding 61.5%. Along with owning Cripple Creek Newmont also owns assets in Canada, Australia, Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, along with Papua New Guinea.
