On November 4, President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev visited the Baku Olympic Stadium to explore the conditions created here for the UN Climate Change Conference. Mr. Aliyev viewed electric mini-cars, electric buses, and EV passenger cars for guest transportation. It appears that Nio has become the official car partner of the COP 29.

Nio announced it provided Nio ES8 (EL8) and ES6 (EL6) crossovers and Nio ET7 sedans to the event. We can see these cars parked next to the Baku Olympic Stadium. Ilham Aliyev inspected China-made electric cars and expressed “high recognition”, according to Nio officials.

It is worth mentioning that Nio doesn’t officially sell its cars in Azerbaijan. However, the provision of cars for the Climate Change Conference in Baku can be a strong statement for the future launch in the local market. CarNewsChina has also discovered that the Nio.az domain has been already registered. In Azerbaijan, Nio will rival the Geely-backed Zeekr, which officially sells in the Republic.

Nio’s overseas sales disappoint

Nio is one of the bestselling NEV makers in China. In October 2024, it sold 20,049 units domestically, and its January-October sales volume is around 170,000 cars.

However, Nio’s overseas sales volume isn’t so satisfying. In September, Nio sold 22 cars in Germany, bringing the 2024 cumulative sales to 323 units. In Norway, Nio sold 184 units in October. Its cumulative sales volume for 2024 reached 780 cars. Better than in Germany, but still isn’t high enough.

On October 23, Nio entered the Middle East through the United Arab Emirates and launched a new arm for the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, Nio MENA. The first Nio House in MENA will open in Abu Dhabi later this year.

Firefly

To boost its overseas sales volume, Nio will launch plug-in hybrid vehicle under the Firefly brand. It will sell exclusively overseas. In China, Nio will continue to sell pure BEVs.
