On November 30, GAC and Huawei held a signing ceremony to jointly create a new high-end smart new energy vehicle brand in addition to GAC Aion, GAC Trumpchi, and GAC Hyptec. GAC coined the cooperation as βHuawei Intelligence + GAC Smart Manufacturingβ, covering R&D, marketing, and services, which is similar to the cooperation mode used by Huawei and four other automakers under the Harmony Intelligent Mobility Alliance (HIMA).
Currently, HIMA has four brands, namely, Aito (was jointly launched by Huawei and Seres, but Seres now owns the trademark), Luxeed (with Chery), Stelato (with BAIC), and Maextro (with JAC).
Interestingly, less than two years ago, GAC suspended a cooperation project with Huawei on smart cars on the grounds that it βdid not need a new brandβ. On July 9, 2022, GAC issued an announcement that it agreed to the implementation of the project between GAC Aion and Huawei (AH8 model). According to the agreement, the two parties will jointly define and develop a series of smart cars for the future based on the new generation of smart car digital platform based on the GAC GEP 3.0 platform and Huawei CCA (computing and communication architecture), equipped with Huaweiβs full-stack smart car solutions.
On the evening of March 27, 2023, GAC issued an announcement stating that the GAC Aion AH8 project has changed from joint development with Huawei to independent development, and Huawei will participate as a supplier. At the earnings conference a few days later, Zeng Qinghong, chairman of GAC, said that GAC and Huawei originally planned to jointly develop a new brand, but GAC has already launched brands such as Aion and Hyper, and that there is no need to create a new brand.
At the recent Guangzhou Auto Show, GAC announced that it plans to launch seven models in 2025, covering pure electric, extended-range, and plug-in hybrid to achieve more than 60% of the groupβs total sales by 2027. Furthermore, in the next three years, GAC will launch 22 new models.
In particular, GAC Trumpchi will work with Huawei to launch three new mid-to-high-end SUVs, MPVs, and sedans, all equipped with Huaweiβs high-end intelligent driving technology. GAC Aion and Hyptec new models will be equipped with GACβs range-extender technology.
Previously, GAC Trumpchi and Huaweiβs new concept car called 1 Concept has been unveiled, measuring 5128 mm long, over 2000 mm wide, and has a wheelbase of 3000 mm. Its appearance adopts GAC Trumpchiβs third-generation design language and uses Huaweiβs smart car solution including the HarmonyOS cockpit and Qiankun ADS 3.0 systems. The mass production vehicle will be unveiled in the first quarter of 2025.
