It was widely expected that Avatr would launch its fourth new model this year. All we have received are new teaser images of the car, known by an internal code name E16 and believed to be called Avatr 08.
The new car, seen testing in a desert-like environment, can be expected to launch in the first half of 2025. A sedan it has a similar positioning to the newΒ Avatr 07 SUV, which will likely make it cheaper than the Avatr 07βs 219,900 to 289,900 yuan price range. The car will be available in both all-electric and EREV versions.
Despite the rather fetching snakeskin camouflage scheme, the outline of the new sedan can be clearly seen. In one of the shots, the daytime running lights can also be clearly seen. We see that the car has the same general style as the Avatr 07 in terms of higher headlights and dual LED daytime running lights. Furthermore, the roof is equipped with Lidar.
Although Changan is the largest shareholder in Avatr, it does not control a majority, with 41%.Β The other main shareholders are CATL 14%, and Chongqing Chengan Foundation 11% with the remainder spread over various investment groups. Huawei is not a shareholder but provides much of the tech, including the HarmonyOS operating system for the cockpit and Huawei Qiankun ADS 3.0 for ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems). Given Huaweiβs involvement, it is likely that the new Avatr will not be one of the cars involved in the Changan Hesai Lidar deal.
From the side profile, we can see that the E16 features concealed door handles and frameless doors. One of the test cars has side view cameras, whereas the other has traditional mirrors. Therefore, high-spec versions of the new car are likely to have side cameras as standard, which will obviously help with aerodynamics.
Equipment specifications are expected to be broadly in line with those seen on the Avatr 07. This likely means a 15.6-inch floating infotainment screen along with a wide 35.4-inch surround screen at the back of the dashboard. Cars equipped with side view cameras will also get two 6.7-inch displays for those cameras. Huaweiβs HarmonyOS 4.0 will likely power the system.
As with all existing Avatr models, the new car will stand on the CHN platform jointly developed by Changan, Huawei, and CATL. Again, the Avatr 07 offers us some clues about the powertrain for the new sedan. All electric rear-wheel drive versions are likely to use the same 252 kW electric motor, while all-wheel drive versions will add an additional 188 kW electric motor to the front axle. The new car may also share this same 4.5 C 82.16 kWh battery supplied by CATL.
The EREV version of the Avatr 07 uses a 231 kW electric motor on the rear axle, and the all-wheel drive versions add a 131 kW electric motor to the front axle. The E16 will definitely use the same 1.5 turbocharged JL469ZQ1 engine to provide range extension. The engine has a maximum power of 115 kW. Itβs possible that the car will also share the same 39.05 kWh pack, which uses CATLβs new sodium-ion Freevoy battery.
