In November, Chinese EV brands had mixed results in the largest European auto market. MG was down 33%, Xpeng was down 19%, BYD was up 24%, and Nio increased by 93%.

244,544 new passenger vehicles were registered in Germany in November, down 0.5% from the previous year, which is nearly flat. 14.4% were battery electric vehicles (BEV), which translates to 35,167 units, significantly down 21.8% from the same month last year. Plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEV) registered 20,604 units, up 13.7% from last year.

Chinese brands registered 2,710 BEVs, which translates to an 8% BEV market share, according to China EV DataTracker.

The insurance registrations are published by the German Federal Motor Authority, which tracks new car plate registrations in the country.

SAIC’s brand MG secured the first position and registered 957 EVs, down 33.2% from the previous month and 42.8% from the same period last year. In 2024 (January – November), MG sold 19,123 EVs in Germany.

MG is subject to an additional 35.3% import tariffs to the EU on top of the existing 10% duty, making the total tariff rate 45.3%.

Geely-made Smart registered 768 vehicles, a decline of 10.1% compared to the previous month and 42.6% down year-over-year. In 2024 (January – November), Smart sold 11,891 EVs in Germany.

BYD registered 431 vehicles, up 24.2% month-on-month and up 23.1% year-over-year. In 2024 (January – November), BYD sold 2,568 EVs in Germany.

BYD is subject to an additional 17% tariffs, bringing the total import duty to 27%.

Another Geely Holding brand, Polestar registered 208 vehicles, a 36.8% increase compared to the previous month but a 26.0% decline year-over-year.

Great Wall Motor and its Ora EV brand registered 195 vehicles, down 9.3% month-on-month and 54.2% year-over-year.

Volkswagen-backed Xpeng registered 81 vehicles, a 19.0% decline compared to the previous month, with no year-over-year data available. In 2024 (January – November), Xpeng registered about 300 EVs in Germany; serious sales started only in June.

Lotus registered 38 vehicles, a 31.0% increase compared to the previous month and an 11.8% rise year-over-year.

Nio registered 29 vehicles, a 93.3% increase from the previous month but a 42.0% decline year-over-year. In 2024 (January – November), Nio registered 367 EVs in Germany, down 70% from the same period last year.

Shanghai-based EV maker entered Germany in October 2022. Last, they managed to sell 1,263 vehicles in the country.

Nio is subject to an additional 20.8% import tariff from the EU, and the total tariff is now 30.8%

Maxus registered only 2 vehicles, down 60.0% from the previous month and 50.0% year-over-year.

For comparison, Tesla registered 2,208 EVs in November in Germany, down 55% from last year. So far, in 2024, Tesla has sold 33,669 EVs in Germany. China-made Teslas are subject to an additional 7.8% tariff on top of the existing 10% duty.

The European Commission decided to increase tariffs on Chinese-made electric cars up to 45.3% from 30 October.
