If you’re looking to buy an electric truck in 2025, the first thing you need to know is that there aren’t a ton of choices. Only seven electric trucks are widely available in the U.S. Determining which ones to avoid buying next year mainly comes down to your budget and industry reviews.

There are a couple of reasons you don’t see more EV pickup trucks on the market. As the BBC reported, it takes a lot more power to charge a pickup than a standard EV. Automakers need to put in much larger batteries for trucks to reach the right driving ranges, which increases production costs. This in turn leads to high prices for consumers.
You can expect to pay close to $60,000 for the most affordable electric trucks — and around $100,000 for the priciest models. In contrast, the average price of a new car across all vehicle types was $48,397 as of early November, according to CarEdge. That’s already a record high average — and many consumers don’t want to pay an extra $10,000 to $30,000 for a new electric pickup.
That explains why the current electric pickup choices currently boil down to these seven vehicles: the Chevrolet Silverado EV, the Ford F-150 Lightning, the GMC Hummer EV Pickup, the GMC Sierra EV, the Ram 1500 REV, the Rivian R1T and the Tesla Cybertruck.
Of those seven trucks, here are three you might want to avoid buying in 2025 based on pricing and reviews.

Ford F-150 Lightning
Starting MSRP (2024 model): $62,995
MPGe: 76 city, 61 highway, 68 combined
EPA-Estimated Range: 240-320 miles
In November, Ford halted production of its F-150 electric pickup until early January 2025 after sales “slipped in October,” The Street reported. That’s not the best sign when it comes to choosing a new vehicle.
In addition, the F-150 Lightning finished last among U.S.-made electric pickups in a range test reported by Inside EVs.

GMC Hummer EV
Starting MSRP (2025 model): $98,845
MPGe: 59 city, 47 highway, 53 combined
Estimated Range: 318 miles
The main problem with the Hummer EV pickup is its price tag — you’ll likely end up paying more than $100,000 once you add on all the desired features.
It ranked No. 4 out of seven EV trucks reviewed by Kelley Blue Book and No. 5 out of six electric trucks reviewed by US News.
Tesla Cybertruck
The Cybertruck has made a lot of headlines with its futuristic design and ranks as the top-selling electric pickup in 2024. But it doesn’t stack up well against the competition in industry reviews.
The Tesla model ranked last in US News’ review of six electric trucks and tied for last in the Kelley Blue Book review.
