In the second week of the year, the China EV market was up, with several exceptions. Nio was down 50%, Xiaomi was up 17%, Tesla was up 42% and BYD was up 17% compared to the week before.
Week 2 (W2) of 2025 was between January 6 and January 12. Week 2 of 2024, used for year-on-year comparison, was between January 8 โ January 14.
In 2024, Nio cumulative registrations in China reached 205,300 EVs, Xiaomi 136,800, Tesla 659,400, and BYD 3,492,900 units.
The weekly sales are published by Li Auto, and despite Liโs not explicitly saying it, they are based on insurance registration data. The numbers are rounded and present new energy vehicles (NEV) sales, the Chinese term for BEVs, PHEVs, and EREVs (range extenders). To be completely precise, it also includes hydrogen vehicles (FCEVs), but their sales are almost non-existent in China. Onvo registrations are not published by Li Auto but come fromย China EV DataTracker.
Keep in mind that insurance registration and sales/deliveries are different datasets. Insurance registration is reported by regulator-related automotive associations, while sales are mostly self-reported by automakers and might include show cars and other instruments.
