KG Mobility, formerly known as SsangYong, is preparing to launch the Musso EV, South Korea’s first electric pick-up truck, ahead of Hyundai and Kia in the domestic market. The official debut is scheduled for the first quarter of 2025. The Musso EV is expected to use a monocoque structure (similar to the Ford Maverick or Honda Ridgeline) and share a platform with the Torres EVX electric SUV.
It is a solution that is increasingly being used in the world of pick-ups, especially those that are electric or small in size. It offers weight savings but at the same time compromises the robustness of the structure. So much so that both Ford and Ram, as well as BYD with its Shark, have added the classic chassis solution.
Plenty of range and a nice battery pack
Although detailed specifications have yet to be revealed, we do know that the Torres EVX is equipped with a 73.4 kWh battery pack, giving it a range of up to 287 miles according to the WLTP cycle. The Musso EV is likely to offer similar performance and position itself as a lifestyle-oriented mid-size pick-up, similar to the Hyundai Santa Cruz.

KG Mobility also plans to market the Musso EV outside of South Korea, with right-hand drive versions targeted at markets such as Australia and the UK. However, it is not yet clear whether the vehicle will be available in other European markets.

The competition is not standing idly by
Meanwhile, Kia has confirmed the development of an electric version of the Tasman pick-up, although details are yet to be revealed. The combustion engine version of the Tasman will debut in Korea in the first half of the year and will also be sold in Australia, the Middle East and possibly other markets yet to be announced.

Hyundai is considering using General Motors’ electric pick-up truck platform as the basis for its own electric vehicle for the US market. Recent sightings suggest that Hyundai is testing a prototype electric pick-up truck that could be fitted with a range extender, with a possible launch planned by 2029.
In summary, while Hyundai and Kia are still developing their electric models, KG Mobility is ready to launch the Musso EV, marking a significant step in the electric vehicle market in South Korea and beyond.
