KGM Launches Musso EV, Korea’s First Electric Pickup Truck

The KGM Musso EV Electric Pickup Truck Launch signifies a historic milestone as it becomes the first electric pickup truck produced by a South Korean automaker. This anticipated model is set to revolutionize the market with its cutting-edge features and modern design.

Unveiled as the flagship release for KGM, formerly known as SsangYong, the Musso EV is more than just another vehicle. It revives the beloved Musso name, which has been part of the brand’s legacy, once associated with both family vans and pickups like the Rexton Sports recognized in Colombia.

The Musso EV is built on the technical foundation of the KGM Torres EVX, extending its chassis to accommodate various needs, including commercial and recreational use. The design remains rugged yet contemporary, reflecting modern pickup aesthetics with its aggressive stance and functional elements.

Available for pre-order, the Musso EV has already generated excitement in South Korea and is expected to capture attention across Europe and Australia. Yet, it remains uncharted territory for markets like Latin America, where strategic plans for electric vehicle sales are still unclear.

Visually, the Musso EV aligns with the Torres line, featuring strong, angular shapes and additional illumination for enhanced visibility. The front resembles the electric SUV it’s derived from, showcasing signature lighting and durable body lines supportive of off-road capabilities.

Buyers will find various customization options for the cargo area, allowing personal adaptations such as load dividers, covers, and racks to fit diverse use cases. Though exact dimensions are to be confirmed, early estimates suggest it will slightly exceed the Torres EVX’s length of 4.71 meters.

When it boils down to hauling power, this electric pickup can handle loads of up to 500 kg, firmly placing it within the medium-duty recreational pickup category. It’s crafted to cater to both everyday hauling and adventurous excursions.

Mechanically, the Musso EV offers two configurations: the base model equips a 207 hp electric motor on the front axle, making it suitable for general driving needs. For those desiring enhanced off-road ability, there’s an all-wheel-drive option featuring dual motors, capable of producing up to 413 hp.

With both configurations utilizing an 80.6 kWh battery, the expected mileage is approximately 401 km according to the Korean homology testing standard. Notably, the battery capacity surpasses the Torres EVX’s 73.4 kWh.

Safety remains at the forefront; this new model includes advanced battery monitoring systems to assess battery health every ten minutes when stationary, addressing recent concerns over electric vehicle fires. KGM has pledged customer compensation if this system fails to perform as intended.

On the interior, convenience and comfort are prioritized with features like Full LED lighting, 17-inch alloy wheels, digital displays, and dual-zone climate control. Higher-end versions will boast genuine leather upholstery along with advanced driver assistance technologies, including autonomous emergency braking and lane-keeping assistance.

The Musso EV enters the market at 48 million Korean won, approximately $35,900 USD. This competitive pricing positions it against rivals like the Dongfeng Rich EV6 and Changan Hunter E-REV.

While the Musso EV holds promise for the electric shift within the automotive industry, it remains to be seen if KGM will extend its array of products to Latin America, where pickup trucks hold immense value and appreciation. The company’s decision could prove pivotal as the push for greener transportation continues globally.
