BYD Tang L arrives at dealerships, a 7-seater packed with 1,086 hp

The BYD Tang L, a new flagship SUV positioned above the current Tang family, has begun arriving at BYD dealerships. Leaked images of the vehicle in dealerships across China have surfaced online.

The Tang L will be available in a plug-in hybrid (DM) and a fully electric (EV) model. The all-electric variant offers 500 kW (670 hp) for rear-wheel-drive (RWD) models and up to 810 kW (1,086 hp) for 4WD variants, combining a 580 kW rear motor and a 230 kW front motor. The 580 kW TZ210XYW synchronous permanent magnet e-motor is used in the rear axle. This motor boasts a peak RPM of 30,000, showcasing BYD’s engineering prowess backed by its 110,000-strong R&D team.

Plug-in hybrid variants include DM-i and DM-p options. The DM-i variant pairs a 1.5-litre internal combustion engine (115 kW / 154 hp) with a 200 kW (268 hp) electric motor. The DM-p variant adds a second 200 kW electric motor for enhanced performance.

Built on an ultra-high-voltage platform exceeding 1000V, the Tang L supports dual-gun fast charging, significantly reducing charging times. Reports suggest it can recharge from 16% to 80% in 10 minutes using a 120 kW charging pile, even at temperatures as low as -30°C.

The Tang L features a dual-colour interior scheme, combining orange and matte grey elements. Inside, the SUV offers a 2+3+2 seating layout, a 15.6-inch centre control screen and an AR-HUD display. The interior includes a D-shaped steering wheel, hidden air-conditioning outlets, and a uniquely designed centre console with physical buttons for convenience.

The Tang L measures 5040 mm in length, 1996 mm in width, and 1760 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2950 mm. It offers a trunk capacity of 675 litres, expandable to 960 litres with the third-row seats folded and 1,960 litres with the second-row seats folded—a 440-litre increase over its predecessor.

As part of BYD’s Dynasty series, the Tang L draws inspiration from Chinese culture. Its design incorporates the “Loong Face” (previously Dragon Face) and taillights inspired by traditional bamboo weaving techniques. The interior reflects traditional Chinese clothing, emphasizing comfort and spaciousness.

The Tang L is expected to start at around 300,000 yuan (approximately 41,450 USD). It will first launch in China, with potential international releases later.
