Nio 2,000, Xpeng 7,000, Tesla 15,300, BYD 62,800

In the second week of March, Nio was up 5%, Tesla was up 11%, and BYD was up 9%, while Xpeng was down 18% from the week before. Onvo registered 1,300 cars, up 18%.

The EV penetration rate reached 52.5%, as 421,000 passenger cars were registered in China, 221,000 of which were electric.

The weekly sales are published by Li Auto or Dongchedi; however, the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) recently urged the cessation of this practice. Li Auto still hasn’t published the sales ranking as of 5 pm in China time, most likely following the CAAM’s urging. The following data are from our sources tracking insurance registrations, which do not include some brands such as Zeekr and Aito. The numbers are rounded and present new energy vehicles (NEV) sales, the Chinese term for BEVs, PHEVs, and EREVs (range extenders). To be completely precise, it also includes hydrogen vehicles (FCEVs), but their sales are almost non-existent in China.

Keep in mind that insurance registration and sales/deliveries are different datasets. Regulator-related automotive associations report insurance registration, while delivery data are self-reported by automakers, which might include show cars, test cars, and other instruments.

Week 11 of 2025 (W11) was between March 10 and 16.

BYD secured the top position with 62,800 insurance registrations in China, up 9.4% from 57,400 units the week before. In the first two weeks of March, BYD registered 120,200 vehicles in China.

BYD Group sold 614,679 vehicles in January and February, up 90% from 322,767 units year-over-year. The Chinese New Year holiday makes it more sense to combine January and February for a year-on-year comparison. This is explained more here.

Wuling followed with 16,600 registrations, an increase of 7.8% from the previous week’s 15,400 units. In the first two weeks of March, Wuling registered 32,000 vehicles in China.

Tesla came next with 15,300 registrations, up 10.9% from 13,800 units a week earlier. In the first two weeks of March, Tesla registered 29,100 vehicles in China.

Xpeng reported 7,000 registrations, down 17.6% from 8,500 units the previous week. In the first two weeks of March, Xpeng registered 15,500 vehicles in China.

Xpeng’s monthly delivery volume has exceeded 30,000 vehicles for four consecutive months. The Mona M03 entry-level sedan has powered its deliveries, contributing about half of the sales in the last two months.

Li Auto recorded 7,900 registrations, an increase of 8.2% from the previous week’s 7,300 units. Li Auto registered 15,200 vehicles in China in the first two weeks of March.

Li Auto sells mainly EREV SUVs. Last year, it launched its first all-electric car, Li Mega, however, the sales were disastrous for the coffin-like vehicle. In response, Li Auto delayed the launch of another all-electric model to Q2 2025. The first all-electric SUV will be the Li Auto i8, which was already teased in spy shots.

GAC Aion registered 7,000 vehicles, up 6.1% from 6,600 units a week earlier. In the first two weeks of March, it registered 13,600 vehicles in China.

Xiaomi registered 6,500 units, up 4.8% from 6,200 units the previous week. In the first two weeks of March, Xiaomi registered 12,700 vehicles in China.

Leapmotor reported 7,000 registrations, increasing 18.6% from 5,900 units a week earlier. In the first two weeks of March, Leapmotor registered 12,900 vehicles in China.

Nio posted 2,000 registrations, increasing 5.3% from 1,900 units the week before. In the first two weeks of March, Nio registered 3,900 vehicles in China.

Onvo recorded 1,300 registrations, up 18.2% from 1,100 units a week earlier. In the first two weeks of March, Onvo registered 2,400 vehicles in China.

Onvo sells a single model, an L60 SUV.

Together, Nio Group registered 3,300 units, slightly up from 3,000 units the week before. In the first two weeks of March, Nio Group registered 6,300 units in China.

Alan Ai, Onvo CEO, recently explained the lessons he learned while running Onvo and the mistakes he made. He mentioned better stock preparation and delays in customers’ orders that resulted in losing their confidence. Another aspect was timing: “Onvo should have a launch in October, and deliveries start in November,” Ai said.

He didn’t directly reiterate the March delivery target of 20,000 units, which is impossible to fulfil at this point. Still, he claimed the company would reach 20,000 deliveries in the sixth or seventh month after delivery started. Onvo L60 launched on September 19 and started deliveries on September 28; thus, Onvo expects to deliver 20,000 units monthly in March or April.
