Improved Smart #1 to get upgraded motor with an additional 50 kW

Now in its third year of production, Smart Automobile is set to upgrade and enhance its first EV under the Geely–Mercedes-Benz joint venture, the Smart #1. Thanks to new filings with China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), we know that the Smart #1 will receive new wheel designs and upgraded electric motors.

Powertrain Upgrades: More Power Across the Range

According to the MIIT filing, regular Smart #1 variants will have a new TZ220XYA02 rear-mounted electric motor producing 250 kW (335 hp), marking a substantial 50 kW (67 hp) increase. The TZ220XYA02 is also found in the Zeekr 009 and Lynk and Co 02 (Z20) – all of which are part of the larger Zhejiang Geely Holding Group umbrella of companies.

Current Smart #1

The Smart #1 Brabus variant, which adds a front-mounted electric motor, will now deliver a combined output of 365 kW (489 hp), gaining an extra 50 kW (67 hp) over the previous version.

Minimal Exterior Changes for Regular Variants

Compared to the current model, the design updates on the updated, regular Smart #1 are minimal. The most noticeable change appears to be the newly designed 18-inch, two-tone alloy wheels. The newly-designed wheels are wrapped in 235/50R18 tyres.

Subtle restyling for the Brabus Variant

The sportier Smart #1 Brabus receives slightly more comprehensive updates. This time, Smart has opted for a more subtle approach, limiting red accents to the front lower skirt, side trim pieces, and rear diffuser.

Notably, the previously striking red roof and side mirrors have been replaced with body-coloured and black finishes, respectively. Even the red highlight in the front lower air intake has been swapped for black.

Additionally, the Brabus variant now features new 10-spoke alloy wheels, replacing the previous 5-spoke design. The Brabus version gets 235/45R19 tyres all round.

The MIIT filing also reveals that the updated Smart #1 measures 4270/1822/1636mm, with a 2750mm wheelbase for the regular variant. The Brabus version is 4300/1822/1636mm, with an identical 2750mm wheelbase.

As a global model, these updates are expected to be introduced in overseas markets in due time. More detailed information should be available closer to the updated Smart #1’s official launch.
