BYD demonstrates 1,300 hp Yangwang U7’s stability with Kung Fu stunt ahead of March 27 launch

BYD teased the Yangwang U7 sedan ahead of the March 27 launch. In the video released on Weibo today, the 1,300 hp EV drives over various speedbumps with Wing Chun master on its roof, demonstrating the stability of the car’s suspension system.

The Yangwang is a high-end brand under BYD. Yangwang U7 will be its third car after the off-roader β€œwater-floating” U8 SUV and β€œdancing supercar” U9.

Yangwang U7 sedan will be a 4-door 5-seater nearly 5.3 meters long. It feature quad motors with a combined power of 956 kW (1,282 hp) and 1,584 Nm torque. The battery capacity is 135.5 kWh, good for a 720 km CLTC range. The price will be revealed on March 27, but BYD calls it a β€œmillion-yuan” class car, which translates to 138,000 USD. The launch price will most likely be lower than that.

U7 is equipped with a Disus-Z suspension system, which capabilities BYD demonstrated in the new video.

The test was taken at Zhangjiakou Ningyuan Airport in Hebei. The U7 drives on asphalt roads randomly covered with speed bumps of different shapes and heights (30 mm, 40 mm, 50 mm).

A Wing Chun master performing the stunt is on top of the car. Wing Chun is a self-defence martial art, a form of Southern Chinese Kung Fu. He maintains his position on one leg only while U7 hits the speedbumps at 15 km/h, and Disus-Z is trying to keep the car steady.

Thanks to four e-motors, each wheel of the Yangwang U7 is controlled independently. BYD claims the Disus-Z identifies the road condition and adjusts the suspension parameters accordingly. β€œAs steady as a mountain,” BYD concludes the video.

Like all Yangwang vehicles, the performance EV is built on 800V and has a maximum charging power of 500 kW, enabling the car to add 300 km in 10 minutes. In addition to the all-electric variant, BYD will launch a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version.

Disus is a set of body control systems unveiled by BYD in April 2023. There were three variants at the time of the launch:

  • Disus-A
    • Employs air suspension to adjust ride height and stiffness dynamically for better adaptability to various driving conditions.
  • Disus-C
    • Utilizes adjustable dampers to improve ride comfort and handling stability.
  • Disus-P
    • Uses hydraulic mechanisms to actively control body movements to maintain stability, especially during dynamic driving scenarios.

The Disus-Z is the newest member of the Disus family, and the Yangwang U7 will be the first car to feature it. The new EV will launch on March 27 in Shenzhen. We will keep an eye on it.
