The BYD Sealion 05 EV crossover was launched in China with a starting price of 117,800 yuan (16,240 USD). It is a mass-market SUV with a 110-liter front trunk, a refrigerator, the βGodβs Eyeβ C driving assistance system, and up to 520 km of range.
The Sealion 05 EV is a part of the BYDβs Sealion series. This model line comprises crossovers with all-electric and plug-in hybrid powertrain variants. It is worth mentioning that the Sealion series is aimed at overseas markets. Previously, the BYD Sealion 07 EV crossover entered several countries. And the BYD Song Plus (Seal-U) SUV was launched in Australia as Sealion 6. On March 25, BYD launched the Sealion 05 EV crossover, which became the latest addition to the lineup.

The BYD Sealion 05 EV is a compact crossover that stands on the e-Platfrom 3.0 Evo architecture. It adopts the brandβs latest Ocean Aesthetics design language with pointing headlights joined by an LED strip. The Sealion 05 EV adopts a minimalistic front end with a small air intake and a slanted bonnet line. However, plastic trim around wheel arches makes this crossover look bulky.
The BYD Sealion 05 EV has flush door handles, blackened B- and C-pillars, and a distinguishing taillight unit in the back. Dimensions of the new model are 4520/1860/1630 mm with a wheelbase of 2720 mm. So, it is the Tiguan-size SUV. Aside from compact size, the Sealion 05 EV offers surprising practicality. It has a 600-liter trunk that can be enlarged to 1460 liters by folding rear seats. It also has a front trunk for 110 liters.
The center screen of the BYD Sealion 05 EV has a diameter of 12.8 inches. The 8.8-inch LCD instrument cluster sits behind the three-spoke steering wheel. The gear shifter of the new model sits on the steering column as it has become a common trend among modern Chinese cars. The center tunnel of the BYD Sealion 05 EV has a block of physical buttons, a wireless phone charging pad, and a pair of cup holders.
Another fine feature of the BYD Sealion 05 EV is a storage box with cooling and heating functions. It can be cooled up to minus 6 degrees Celsius. Moreover, it can be heated for up to 50 degrees Celsius. Another highlight of the BYD Sealion 05 EV is the βGodβs Eyeβ C (DiPilot 100) driving assistance system. It comprises five mm-wave radars, 12 ultrasonic sensors, and 12 cameras. It is suitable for the Navigate On Autopilot (NOA) function on highways.
BYD Sealion 05 EV powertrain and prices
The BYD Sealion 05 EV goes standard with a 140 kW (188 hp) synchronous permanent magnet electric motor in the rear axle. It is one of a few BYD crossovers with RWD. This model has a 50 kWh LFP battery on board for 430 km under CLTC conditions. The more powerful variant of the Sealion 05 EV offers a peak power of 160 kW (215 hp). It has a 60.9 kWh battery for 520 km.
The BYD Sealion 05 EV is available for purchase in three trim levels. Their price range is 117,800 β 137,800 yuan (16,240 β 19,000 USD). For comparison, the BYD Sealion 05 DM-i costs 102,800 β 142,800 yuan (14,170 β 19,690 USD).
