BYD’s Fang Cheng Bao Bao 3 SUV with drone system to begin pre-sales March 31

BYD’s specialized off-road sub-brand, Fang Cheng Bao, has officially announced the upcoming market introduction of its Bao 3 electric SUV. The vehicle will commence pre-sales on March 31 with an anticipated starting price of 220,000 yuan (approximately 30,300 USD).

The Bao 3 presents a distinctive boxy SUV profile with a blacked-out front grille and prominent bumper styling. A rear-mounted external storage compartment accentuates its utilitarian design. With dimensions of 4,605 mm in length, 1,900 mm in width, and 1,720 mm in height, the vehicle sits on a 2,745 mm wheelbase, positioning it firmly in the mid-size SUV category.

The Bao 3 is powered by a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system combining a 110 kW AC induction motor at the front with a 200 kW permanent magnet motor at the rear. This configuration delivers a combined output of 310 kW (422 hp), enabling the vehicle to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in a manufacturer-claimed 4.9 seconds. It has a 78.72 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery pack, providing an estimated range of 510 km under China’s CLTC test conditions.

The vehicle’s technical specifications reveal several notable features for off-roading. These include an intelligent torque adaptation control system (iTAC), Yun-C adaptive damping suspension with predictive functionality, and a five-link rear suspension design. While utilizing a unibody construction rather than traditional body-on-frame architecture, the Bao 3 incorporates underbody protection elements for off-road applications.

Inside the cabin, the driver is presented with a digital instrument cluster in a floating display configuration complemented by a central touchscreen interface. Physical controls maintain a piano key-style layout for operational convenience. The vehicle offers an optional integrated drone system developed in collaboration with DJI, specifically adapted from the Air 3S model to provide automated aerial photography capabilities. The Bao will also have God’s Eye autonomous driving system and DiPilot 100.

Positioned as an entry-level offering in Fang Cheng Bao’s product lineup below the Bao 5 model (see specs), the Bao 3 enters a competitive market segment that includes established alternatives such as the Deepal G318 (see specs) and Tank 300 Hi4-T (see specs). Following the March 31 pre-sale commencement, customer deliveries are expected to begin in mid-2024.
