Volkswagen advanced its “In China, for China” strategy today at Auto Shanghai 2025, unveiling three electric concept vehicles in a world premiere: the FAW-Volkswagen ID.AURA, the SAIC Volkswagen ID.ERA, and the Volkswagen Anhui ID.EVO.
“Volkswagen combines its global strengths with China’s innovative power to create a fully connected intelligent mobility experience,” stated Stefan Mecha, CEO of Volkswagen Brand China.
Developed jointly by Sino-German teams, the three concepts cater to the growing demand among Chinese consumers for more expressive designs. While showcasing a differentiated style for each joint venture, they maintain clear brand identity:

- ID. AURA (FAW-Volkswagen): A compact electric sedan concept based on the new China-specific CMP platform, targeting users seeking modern aesthetics and smart tech. Its design emphasizes “dynamic,” “young,” and “family” attributes with flowing aerodynamics, a sporty stance, and a unique “Lilac Breeze” multi-tonal paint. The interior focuses on minimalist aesthetics, practicality, and features the new CEA E/E architecture enabling L2++ ADAS and an AI virtual assistant with a customizable OS.

- ID. ERA (SAIC-Volkswagen): Volkswagen’s first range-extender (EREV) full-size SUV concept, designed for users prioritizing grand design and quality travel (families/business). It projects an image of being “grand,” “minimalist,” and “robust.” Highlights include a spacious six-seat layout (with mentions of a potential seven-seat version) featuring second-row “executive seats,” a claimed combined range exceeding 1000 km (CLTC) thanks to its EREV system and active air intake, L2++ Urban NOA, and an AI assistant powered by a Chinese large language model.

- ID. EVO (Volkswagen Anhui): A full-size pure electric (BEV) SUV concept, reportedly a product of deep collaboration between VW and Xpeng via the Anhui venture, aimed at young, urban users seeking diverse lifestyles. Its design is described as “unconventional,” “bold,” and “avant-garde,” featuring impactful proportions, short overhangs, sculpted surfaces, and a striking “Fjord Blue” paint inspired by the aurora. It boasts a BEV range of over 700 km (CLTC), 800V ultra-fast charging, a customizable 3D virtual assistant, L2++ Urban NOA, and over 100 controllable exterior LEDs for dynamic light signatures.
“The ID. EVO, ID. ERA, and ID. AURA concepts are born for China, fully reflecting our integration of Chinese user needs to create diverse products and forward-looking technologies,” Mecha elaborated.
Production versions derived from these concept cars are scheduled to launch sequentially starting from 2026, reinforcing Volkswagen’s commitment to delivering competitive, high-tech vehicles while upholding the brand’s core values of safety and quality in the crucial Chinese market.
