Ford F-150 is Top Selling Electric Truck in USA — in May and All Time

Ford reached out today with some interesting news. The Ford F-150 Lightning is the best selling electric pickup truck in the United States again. That’s for both the month of May and across all time. Cumulatively, the F-150 Lightning has sold a lot more units than the #2 Rivian R1T and the #3 Tesla Cybertruck. In May, meanwhile, the F-150 Lightning very narrowly outsold the Cybertruck.

Is this going to be the story for a long time to come? Did all of those Cybertruck reservations evaporate to never return again? Is the Cybertruck suffering from Elon Musk’s political extremism? Or will the Cybertruck surge ahead in the future if Tesla brings down the starting price and/or adds range? Well, for now, I have to think the Cybertruck isn’t what most truck buyers want and the F-150 Lightning will indefinitely hold the lead in the electric pickup truck market. We shall see. In the meantime, how about some numbers?

As we can see there, the F-150 Lightning has more than 84,000 sales so far, about 35,000 more than either the Rivian R1T or Tesla Cybertruck! In the month of May, the Ford F-150 Lightning eked out the win, with 10,829 sales compared to the Tesla Cybertruck’s 10,087.

Admittedly, I don’t know a lot about the data source here. It’s notoriously hard to get valid US sales data for Tesla, especially on a monthly basis and even more especially right after the month ends. But Motor Intelligence seems to charge a pretty penny for its reports, and Ford sent over the table above and the news.

We’ll see what comes out for Q2 when we get more data. For the time being, though, the Ford F-150 Lightning is king. And it is indeed a great electric truck.
