MG4 EV offically introduces violet exterior ahead of China pre-sales on August 5

SAIC Motor has unveiled a new version of the MG4 electric hatchback for the Chinese market, featuring a new exterior colour called “Donglai Purple” (东来紫). The name “Donglai” literally means “coming from the East”, and SAIC says the paint is designed to reflect metallic gloss in sunlight and a mist-like pearlescence from different angles.

The revised MG4 will begin pre-orders on August 5, with deliveries scheduled for September 5.

The updated MG4 measures 4,395 mm in length, 1,842 mm in width, and 1,551 mm in height, with a 2,750 mm wheelbase. It remains on SAIC’s Nebula EV platform and utilises a rear-mounted 120 kW permanent magnet synchronous motor, paired with a lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery supplied by Rept Battery Energy. Top speed is listed as 160 km/h. Range and battery capacity have not been disclosed.

Oppo-linked cockpit and new UI

The new MG4 introduces an innovative cockpit system co-developed with Oppo, offering:

  • Smartphone mirroring
  • Voice-activated functions
  • Gesture-based navigation

MG claims the interface is compatible with devices from Oppo, Huawei, and Apple, allowing app updates via smartphones and eliminating the need for in-car downloads.

Design updates and possible battery changes

Exterior revisions include a closed front grille, arrow-style taillights, and a full-width light bar. The model retains traditional door handles, 17-inch wheels, and a left-side front charging port.

As reported earlier, MG brand director Chen Cui has teased that the MG4 could adopt a semi-solid-state battery in future versions, though this is not confirmed for the September launch.

Stronger performance overseas

While the MG4 sold only 13 units in China in February 2025, it continues to perform well abroad. In Q1 2025, MG Motor Europe registered 78,505 vehicles, representing a 33.5% year-over-year increase, with the MG4 contributing significantly. In the UK, MG reported 24,641 registrations in Q1, and over 40,000 MG4 units sold since launch.

MG plans to launch 13 new electrified models globally by 2027, backed by an investment of approximately 100 billion yuan (approximately 14 billion USD). The MG4 remains at the centre of that plan.
