New MG4 EV spotted in China, interior exposed, to launch in September

SAIC Motor is preparing to launch a redesigned MG4 electric hatchback in China. A spy photo published by Chinese automotive blogger 燕衡ε₯³εΈζœΊ revealed the real-world appearance of the updated model, with increased dimensions and Oppo’s cockpit system. The car is expected to open for pre-orders on August 5 and officially launch on September 5.

As reported yesterday, SAIC has introduced a new exterior colour for the MG4 called Donglai Purple (东ζ₯η΄«). The name β€œDonglai” translates as β€œcoming from the East,” and according to SAIC, the paint is designed to reflect metallic gloss under sunlight and a mist-like pearlescent finish at different angles. The spy prototype was finished in this new Donglai Purple colour, making it a real-world sighting of the hue outside of studio renderings.

Updated interior

Inside, the MG4 receives a minimalist dashboard layout. A floating central touchscreen and rectangular digital instrument panel are paired with a two-spoke multifunction steering wheel.

The vehicle will integrate Oppo’s in-car ecosystem. According to SAIC, this platform enables smartphone-activated vehicle preparation, phone-car app integration, AI assistant interaction, and gesture-based navigation control.

Other features include a column-mounted electronic gear shifter, wireless phone charging pad, metallic physical buttons, and seating with power adjustment, heating, and ventilation. MG says the vehicle will also support L2+ assisted driving features, including highway Navigate on Autopilot (NOA), although full specifications have not been disclosed.

Larger dimensions

The new MG4 measures 4,395 mm in length, 1,842 mm in width, and 1,551 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,750 mm. These figures represent an increase over the current model (4,287 mm long, 2,705 mm wheelbase), placing it above key rivals such as the BYD Dolphin and Volkswagen ID.3 in terms of size. The added length and wheelbase may provide more usable passenger and cargo room.

120 kW rear motor confirmed

Regulatory filings show the new MG4 will be equipped with a 120 kW rear-mounted motor. The front MacPherson and rear five-link independent suspension configuration carries over from the current model.

Chinese media reports have suggested the updated MG4 may adopt a semi-solid-state battery with a potential range of up to 800 km under CLTC testing. However, SAIC has not confirmed these details.

MG4 sales in China have remained limited, with only 10 units sold in June 2025. The update may help SAIC better position the MG4 against domestic A0-class EV competitors, such as the BYD Dolphin and Volkswagen ID.3.
