Mazda EZ-60 SUV receives 10,000 pre-orders in 48 hours; eyes August launch

The Mazda EZ-60, a new midsize electric SUV developed in partnership with Changan, recorded 10,060 pre-orders within 48 hours of its public debut at the Shanghai Auto Show. However, these are not locked-in pre-orders. The pre-orders followed the introduction of a low-commitment deposit program designed to attract early interest. The pre-order system uses a 10 yuan (1.40 USD) deposit model that accumulates daily credit, which can be applied toward the final purchase under certain conditions.

Built on Changan’s EPA platform—also used in the Deepal S07—the EZ-60 is available in two electrified versions. The range-extended variant pairs a 72 kW, 1.5-litre engine (functioning solely as a generator) with a 190 kW electric motor and a 31.73 kWh lithium-iron-phosphate battery, providing an electric-only range of 160 km. Details for the fully electric version have not yet been fully disclosed, though preliminary figures suggest a competitive range.

Mazda has implemented a digital-first cabin anchored by a 26.45-inch 5K ultra-wide screen that integrates the instrument panel, infotainment system, and climate controls. Physical buttons have been minimised in favour of touch and voice interaction. Rear passengers are also provided with touchscreens to manage comfort and media settings. An optional 23-speaker 7.1.4-channel Dolby Atmos audio system is available.

Interior storage has been designed with versatility in mind. The EZ-60 offers 350 litres of cargo space, expandable to 2,036 litres, with the rear seats folded. The fully electric model includes a 126-litre front trunk. Additional compartments are placed throughout the cabin for daily use.

In terms of dimensions, the EZ-60 measures 4,850 mm in length, 1,935 mm in width, and 1,620 mm in height, with a 2,902 mm wheelbase. The exterior design includes slim LED daytime running lights, a closed-off front grille, and a steeply raked rear window with a full-width taillight bar.

The EZ-60 includes nine airbags as standard and features an L2-level driver assistance system supported by five HD cameras, five millimetre-wave radars, and twelve ultrasonic sensors. The battery safety system, developed in collaboration with CATL and CALB, includes eight layers of protection and has been engineered to meet or exceed China’s 2026 regulatory standards.

Editor’s comments:

As informed by Changan Mazda, EZ-60 is expected to launch in August. Its initial response suggests Mazda may be regaining traction in China’s competitive electric vehicle market. With two more co-developed EVs with Changan in development, we will be watching to see whether this early momentum can translate into long-term performance as the EZ-60 approaches full-scale production.
