Nonprofit receives funds to add electric vehicles for its Somerset fleet | News

SOMERSET, Pa. โ€“ Goodwill of the Southern Alleghenies will receive $95,000 in funding to add two electric passenger vehicles and two medium-duty EV box trucks.

The state Department of Environmental Protection is enabling the move, Gov Josh Shapiroโ€™s office said Tuesday.

The DEP awarded $2.3 million to 27 projects to improve air quality across the state through cleaner fuel transportation infrastructure through the Alternative Fuels Incentive Grant program.

โ€œThis funding builds on the Shapiro administrationโ€™s commitment to address climate change through alternative fuel solutions that are reliable and efficient. AFIG aims to increase sustainable and renewable energy throughout Pennsylvaniaโ€™s transportation sector, lowering greenhouse gas emissions and improving air quality for many communities,โ€ said DEP Acting Secretary Jessica Shirley.

Goodwill of the Southern Alleghenies is a Johnstown- based nonprofit, but has a list of retail, donation or transportation centers across a seven-county area that includes sites in Somerset and Windber in Somerset County.

Projects such as Somersetโ€™s introduce either low- or zero-emissions transportation offerings or infrastructure, Shirley said.

โ€œA substantial amount of air pollution comes from cars and trucks on the road, and through these projects, we are making Pennsylvaniaโ€™s air cleaner,โ€ Shirley said.
