Hertz Is Trimming Its Chevy Silverado EV Fleet, and the Deals Come With a Surprising Bonus

Hertz is not happy with having so many electric vehicles in its fleet and is now getting rid of many of them. After a Tesla sellout, Hertz is offloading part of its Chevrolet Silverado EV fleet. The prices hover around the $63,500 mark, which is competitive for a well-equipped, low-mileage electric pickup.

Hertz surprised everyone, including Elon Musk, when it announced a deal to buy 100,000 Tesla EVs for its rental fleet in 2021. It also announced plans to transition one-fifth of its fleet to electric vehicles. Hertz later started buying electric vehicles from GM and Polestar, as if its future depended on it. In an interview from September 2022, Hertz CEO (at the time) Stephen Scherr told Yahoo Finance that its EV fleet was a huge success with the customers.

Well, it appears that the success had been greatly exaggerated. Earlier reports indicated that Hertz’s electric vehicles were clogging the parking lots, and customers refused to accept them. Horror stories of customers stranded on the side of the road contributed to Hertz’s EV fiasco. Scherr left Hertz, and the rental company started dumping used electric vehicles on the market with Jil West as the new CEO.

Tesla EVs were naturally the first to go, a poor decision in light of plummeting resale values after the EV maker slashed prices. This affected Hertz’s balance sheet and contributed to the EV fearmongering. However, it didn’t stop the company from selling its EVs, with Polestar cars following shortly. Chevrolet Silverado EV trucks are the last to fall victim to this new strategy, being dumped on the market despite their low mileage.

Hertz Cars Sales, the company’s used car arm, has listed 35 Silverado EV trucks for sale. According to InsideEVs, the sale is part of a new strategy to align its EV fleet size with demand. Plenty of electric pickup trucks remain in Hertz’s fleet, and the company has no specific complaints about the truck. This is an opportunity for people in the market to buy a low-mileage electric pickup truck at a reasonable price.

The trucks listed for sale are all 3WT models, a fleet-only version of the Work Truck lineup. Work Truck models were the first Silverado EVs that Chevrolet produced, and the 3WT is the second highest-spec model after the 4WT. This means it has plenty of equipment for a practical pickup truck. Although Chevrolet doesn’t list the Silverado EV 3WT on its website, as it’s exclusively sold to company fleets, an earlier report from GM Authority revealed that the 3WT model retailed for $74,900.

The trucks listed on Hertz’s website hover around $63,500, which means they are competitively priced. This is even more obvious when you consider their mileage, with many trucks having less than 10,000 miles. The Silverado EV 3WT has a 393-mile range, more than most electric pickup trucks on the market. It can also tow up to 12,500 lbs., which is no joke.

However, there’s one more reason to love these deals. Unlike other GM electric vehicles, these trucks still offer Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support. This makes them not only a solid workhorse around a farm or small company but also a great private vehicle with plenty of kit and convenience features.
