The steel structure of Xiaomi’s second-phase (F2) car factory was completed in China two months after the construction had started. It will go into operation in 2025 to leverage the production volume of the well-known phone maker. The factory upgrade is well-needed as the waiting time for the Xiaomi SU7 still reaches 22-28 weeks (5.5-7 months).
The first phase (F1) of the Xiaomi car plant was completed in June 2023. It took 15 months to put it into operation. Xiaomi started selling its first car, the SU7 sedan (see specs), in March 2024. However, the demand for this EV seemingly exceeded the production volume. As a result, the waiting time for the Xiaomi SU7 reached 32 weeks (8 months) in particular days. So, Xiaomi needed a factory upgrade.
In July 2024, Xiaomi purchased an area of 531,000 square meters next to the F1 plant in Beijing for around 842 million yuan (119 million USD). Construction of the Xiaomi second-phase car (F2) plant began in early August. After two months, we got an update on the F2 Xiaomi factory.
Xiaomi F2 plant update
On October 9, the Third Bureau of China Construction reported that the Xiaomi F2 car body workshop was capped. It means workers have completed the plant’s steel frame. It took only two months to finish the foundation, prepare materials and components, and install the steel structure. This result underlines Xiaomi’s determination to ramp up its car production volume as soon as possible.
However, the Xiaomi F2 plant still has several steps ahead of the completion. They include the installation of concrete walls, roof sheeting, infrastructure construction, etc. Xiaomi is confident that the F2 plant will be completed within 12 months. So, construction of the plant appears to be happening at all times of the day and even at night on weekends.
According to Xiaomi’s plans, the plot will house 391,500 square meters of buildings above ground and 8,503 square meters underground. The maximum building height is about 16 meters, and around 15% of the plot will be given over to green space. There will also be parking for over 1,000 cars.
The Xiaomi F2 factory is an important step for the company to ramp up its production volume as some potential customers aren’t happy with the delivery period of an ordered vehicle. In addition, the second phase factory will support the launch of Xiaomi’s second model, the MX11 SUV. Next year, Xiami will also launch the SU7 Ultra sports car with 1,525 hp.
