Sonoma has added two all-electric Ford F-150 Lightning trucks to the cityβs public works fleet.
Electric vehicles are an important step in the cityβs Climate Action Plan goals for zero emissions, which was recommended by the Climate Action Commission and adopted by city council in January.
Public works staff will use the pickups for a variety of daily tasks including road maintenance, infrastructure repair, and public services.
βWe are proud to incorporate electric vehicles into our fleet,β Sonoma Mayor John Gurney said. βThis investment not only advances the cityβs sustainability goals but also shows the community that EVs can be an effective solution for essential operations.β
On Sept. 4, Sonoma City Council authorized the city manager to execute purchase agreements for two fully electric 2024 Ford Lightning Pro trucks. Each vehicle cost approximately $62,000.
Council also approved a budget adjustment for the 2024-25 fiscal year to include $15,000 for the installation of two new electric vehicle charging plugs at the public works yard.
Sonoma has a fleet of 71 vehicles, including fire trucks, ambulances, passenger vehicles, trucks, tractors, generators, trailers, and other specialized equipment.
Fleet vehicles are replaced when they reach the end of their service life or are no longer at the minimum of operational requirements. Two of the Public Works fleet vehicles came to the end of their service and were replaced with electric ones. The transition to electric vehicles will not reduce operational capabilities or emergency preparedness.
