As Mazda prepares for the official launch of the EZ-6 on October 25 in China, I had the chance to test drive this sleek sedanβs extended-range electric version (EREV). Developed in collaboration with Changan, it will be available as both BEV and EREV. Mazda confirmed the EZ-6 would be launched globally later this year.
The Exterior
The exterior design of the Mazda EZ-6 exudes a sporty elegance, characterized by its coupe-like silhouette and striking front fascia. At the forefront, a signature Mazda-like grille enhances its aggressive stance, flanked by split-structure headlights that conceal the leading lights beneath sleek daytime running lights. This distinctive lighting arrangement, known as the βWings of Light,β contributes to the vehicleβs unique identity and serves a functional purpose, ensuring visibility while maintaining an aesthetic appeal. The illuminated Mazda logo further adds a touch of sophistication, enhancing the vehicleβs overall modern look.
From the side, the EZ-6 presents a dynamic profile that emphasizes its sporty characteristics. The carefully sculpted lines create a sense of motion, while the rear features a visually appealing ducktail spoiler that activates at speeds above 90 km/h, improving aerodynamics. The rear light clusters echo the design language of other Mazda models, complemented by a thorough brake light that enhances visibility. The vehicleβs overall dimensions, measuring 4921 mm in length, 1890 mm in width, and 1485 mm in height with a wheelbase of 2895 mm, position it larger than its Deepal counterparts, offering both a commanding presence on the road and ample interior space. The practicality of its large liftback reminds me of the Mazda 6 from the early 2000s.
The Interior
Inside the EZ-6 EREV, the focus on comfort and technology is immediately apparent. The front is equipped with zero-gravity seats, which provide excellent support. These seats can recline nearly flat, making them ideal for taking a break during long journeys. However, the top trimβs black and brown two-tone leather upholstery may only appeal to older buyers. We have been informed that a single-tone black leather upholstery will be available for the international version of the EZ-6.
Unlike previous Mazdas, the EZ-6 has a 14.6-inch infotainment screen and a 50-inch AR heads-up display that directly projects important information onto the windshield, similar to the Deepal L07. Navigation directions, speed, and even battery status are all easily visible, allowing you to keep your eyes on the road. The Snapdragon 8155 chipset powering the infotainment system was surprisingly quick in response and seamlessly transitioned between different functions.
One notable feature of the EZ-6 is its 14-speaker Sony audio system, which delivers crisp and immersive sound quality. The 64-color ambient lighting system is customizable to fit different moods. The electronic sunshades are optional.
Behind the wheel
The Mazda EZ-6 showcases the brandβs signature handling, maintaining a low center of gravity that results in stability and composure, particularly when cornering. The precise and responsive steering enhances the driving experience, a characteristic familiar to Mazda enthusiasts.
Driving the EZ-6 EREV offers a smooth experience that combines the advantages of an electric motor with a petrol engine range extender. In normal conditions, the 160 kW rear electric motor provides solid acceleration with minimal noise, delivering instant torque for an intense yet refined acceleration. The EZ-6 continues to impress at higher speeds with its rear-wheel-drive setup, offering excellent traction and balance, significantly when accelerating out of tight turns. The adjustable rear spoiler, which activates above 90 kph, enhances aerodynamics and stability.
The battery alone is sufficient for short urban commutes, with either 130 km or 200 km of pure electric range. I drove a version equipped with the 200 km battery, effortlessly handling a dayβs worth of city driving without needing a recharge. The regenerative braking system smoothly feeds energy back into the battery without feeling intrusive.
The EREV distinguishes itself with its 1.5-liter petrol engine, which acts as a generator to recharge the battery when it depletes. It kicks in seamlessly when the battery is low, with little disruption to the driving experience. The comprehensive range extends to an impressive 1,300 km, making this car well-suited for long trips with sparse charging infrastructure.
The suspension effectively absorbs bumps and rough patches on the highway, ensuring a comfortable ride. Even when the petrol engine is running, cabin noise is minimized, allowing you to enjoy the ride in relative silence. The L2.5 driving assistance system, primarily advanced cruise control, efficiently keeps the car centered in its lane and maintains a safe distance from other vehicles.
Charging the EZ-6 EREV is straightforward. When using a fast charger, the battery can be charged from 30% to 80% in 20 minutes, allowing for quick stops.
Verdict
I have lived with multiple Madzas over the years; the EZ-6 did not disappoint. Mazda spent three years to develop the EZ-6. The EREV strikes a balance between driving engagement and the practicality of the extended range provided by the petrol engine. Its smooth driving experience, solid handling, and high-tech cabin make it a compelling option for drivers who want the benefits of going electric without range anxiety.
Its BEV version will rival the Model 3 in an increasingly competitive market. Yet, its mix of Mazdaβs renowned driving dynamics and liftback configuration has won my heart over. It is nice to see that a Model 3 competitor with Japanese DNA will finally join the global market. With the official launch set for October 25 in China, more details of the EZ-6 will be revealed.
