Nio’s flagship ET9 interior spied before launch later this month

The Nio ET9 will be launched later this month at the Nio Day event in Guangzhou on December 21. Before this, spy shots of the interior have emerged.

The new flagship sedan from Nio, the ET9, is the largest departure from the current Nio lineup to date. Firstly, there’s the looks. Nio calls this car a sedan, but to us, it looks more like the EC6 and EC7 SUV coupes rather than Nio’s existing sedans, the ET5 and ET7. Then there is the new crazy Skyride active suspension, which appears to be a game changer.

From the interior spy shots, we can see that the new Nio is also really quite different from the other Nios inside. Probably the first noticeable aspect of this is the center-mounted screen. On all previous Nios, this has been vertically mounted running into the center console, but with the new ET9, this is a floating horizontally mounted screen. The instruments display, which on all previous Nio cars has been a small unit mounted where the steering column meets the dashboard, is swapped on the ET9 for what’s described as a ring display that goes from one side of the front to the other. This on the driver’s side will give driving information and on the passenger side entertainment information. However, given this width, it is questionable how useful it will be, particularly for entertainment purposes.

The steering wheel is largely a rectangle and a two-spoke design. From what can be seen of the center console, it appears that the drive selector is no longer mounted here but on a stalk mounted on the steering column.

A four-seater, the center console extends into the rear. The spy shot appears to show a centrally-mounted rear screen on the console, possibly with some form of storage compartment below it.

The car’s dimensions are 5324/2016/1620mm, and the wheelbase is 3250 mm, making it by far the largest Nio to date. It should also be pointed out that with that height, the car is more like an SUV coupe, not only in looks, than a sedan. The weight is 2700 kg.

The Nio ET9 uses the company’s new, self-developed 900V Thunder electric drive system. This includes the world’s first 925V W-Pin synchronous permanent magnet electric motor, which has a peak power output of 340 kW. Mounted on the rear axle, it weighs just 79 kg, resulting in a power density of 4.3 kW/kg. Meanwhile, the front axle has an asynchronous induction motor with a peak power of 180 kW and a power density of 2.6 kW/kg.

In another break from previous Nio cars, the ET9 gets a new battery. Of course, being Nio, this is still swappable, but it has a global 900 V architecture that can be used with 500V to 1000V charging piles with a peak charging power of up to 600 kW and a peak current rate of 772 A. This gives it a 5C charging capability, and Nio claims that it can take on the equivalent of 255 km of range in 5 minutes. The battery is a 120 kWh unit, and the 46105 cylindrical cells were claimed to have been developed between Nio and CATL in collaboration. Energy density is claimed to be 292 Wh/kg. Due to Nio’s modular battery technology, the car is compatible with all other Nio batteries, including the 150 kWh semi-solid state battery.

Pre-sales prices are 800,000 yuan (110,000 USD) and deliveries are expected to begin in the first part of 2025.
