Four Chinese cars earned five stars in the Euro NCAP crash and safety evaluation test in December. These models include Deepal S07 from Changan, Stellantis-backed Leapmotor C10, Maxus eTerron 9 from SAIC, and Volvo EX30 with Geely tech on board.
Last year, E-NCAP representatives underlined that Chinese manufacturers were anxious to prove their relevance to European buyers. Euro NCAP crash-tested nine models from the Middle Kingdom. They’ve all got five stars. In December this year, Euro NCAP evaluated the safety of five more Chinese cars. Four of them got five stars, and a single model achieved a four-star result.
Chinese cars got five stars in Euro NCAP crash test
As mentioned, four Chinese cars got five stars in the Euro-NCAP crash test: Deepal S07, Leapmotor C10, Maxus eTerron 9, and Volvo EX30. We call the EX30 a Chinese car as it stands on the Geely-developed SEA modular architecture and widely adopted other Chinese tech.
Among these four vehicles, the Maxus eTerron 9 achieved the highest overall rating. It scored 91% in the Adult Occupant segment. It also got 85% in the Child Occupant category. Vulnerable Road Users achieved 84%. And the Safety Assist functions got 83%. The eTerron 9 positions as a high-end electric pickup truck with 4WD for 325 kW (435 hp) and a WLTP range of 430 km. It speeds up to 100 km/h in 5.8 seconds and can tow up to 3500 kg.
The Changan-backed Deepal S07 scored highest in the Adult Occupant category with 95%. It is the highest rating among every car evaluated by Euro NCAP in 2024. However, its Child Occupant segment scored 87%. Safety Assist and Vulnerable Road Users functions got 77% and 74%, respectively. The Deepal S07 is a mid-size crossover. It is available in both BEV and EREV variants in China. Moreover, its range-extended variant got CATL’s latest Freevoy battery with sodium elements inside.
The Volvo EX30 scored 88% in the Adult Safety segment and 85% in the Child Occupant category. The Active Safety and Vulnerable Road Users segments got 80% and 79%, respectively. The Volvo EX30 is a well-known compact SUV that shares the platform with cars like Zeekr X and Smart #1.
Finally, the Stellantis-backed Leapmotor C10 crossover scored 89% in the Adult Occupant segment and 85% in the Child Occupant category. However, its performance in the Vulnerable Road Users and Active Safety categories is 77% and 76%, respectively.
A car with four stars from Euro NCAP
The MG ZS Hybrid compact crossover became the only Chinese car evaluated in December 2024 that earned four stars. It scored highest in the Child Occupant category with 82%. The MG ZS HEV achieved 76% in the Safety Assist Segment. As for the Adult Occupant and Vulnerable Road Users categories, their performance is 75% and 73%, respectively.
The MG ZS Hybrid is a compact crossover with a distinguishing styling and dimensions of 4430/1818/1635 mm with a wheelbase of 2610 mm. Its powertrain system comprises a 1.5-liter self-aspirated engine for 75 kW (100 hp) paired with an e-motor for 100 kW (134 hp). The combined power of the system reaches 145 kW (193 hp). The MG ZS Hybrid has a 3-speed DHT gearbox and a small battery of 1.83 kWh. It can be charged externally.
