redefining style and versatility in compact electric SUVs

The Smart #5 is a notable development for the brand, offering a pure electric mid-size SUV that combines bold design, performance, and advanced technology. As the largest model in Smart’s lineup, it follows the “Sensual and Sharp” design philosophy. With a 2.9-meter wheelbase and 4705 mm length, the Smart #5 has a strong presence on the road. This model expands on the success of Smart #1 (see specs), offering a blend of practicality and driving refinement.

The prototype of the Smart #5 was first unveiled at the Beijing Auto Show back in June 2024 with no B-pillars. Although outwardly, the production model closely assembles the prototype, the production model has the normal B-pillars.

So how does it compare to the Smart #1? Let’s take a deep dive into Smart #5 on this week’s Sunday China Drive.

Exterior

The Smart #5’s exterior design is both dynamic and practical. The aerodynamic roofline enhances the vehicle’s sleek silhouette, while the long wheelbase gives it an imposing presence. The Smart #5’s bold front fascia is highlighted by quad LED daytime running lights and vertical grille slats, marking its distinct identity. The vehicle has a roof rack that supports up to 240 kg in static load, ideal for transporting outdoor gear such as bikes or kayaks.

For added convenience, an optional side step simplifies access to the roof. Despite its larger size, the Smart #5 retains Smart’s trademark agility, effortlessly navigating tight spaces and narrow streets.

Interior

Step inside the Smart #5, and you’ll find a spacious, premium cabin designed for comfort and technology. The interior combines high-quality materials, including European wood accents and soft-touch surfaces, with a modern, capsule-like structure. This design enhances sophistication and comfort, making the Smart #5 a pleasant place for long journeys.

The cockpit features dual 13-inch AMOLED 2.5K central control screens powered by an AMD V2000 chip, ensuring an intuitive user experience. A 25.6-inch AR-HUD adds a futuristic touch, while the Sennheiser sound system on higher trims delivers an immersive audio experience.

With 34 storage spaces throughout the cabin, the Smart #5 offers practical storage solutions, including a 72L front trunk and a 630L rear trunk, which expands to 1530L with the seats folded flat. The “zero-gravity” passenger seat provides optimal support for extended drives, and rear passengers enjoy ample legroom. Dual-layer laminated glass enhances cabin tranquility by reducing external noise, ensuring a serene environment whether driving through busy streets or cruising on highways.

Behind the Wheel

The Smart #5 delivers an impressive driving experience, combining smooth handling with responsive performance. Its sophisticated suspension system—dual-wishbone suspension in the front and multi-link in the rear—provides excellent road feedback while maintaining ride comfort. From tackling urban potholes to handling uneven rural roads, the Smart #5 adapts effortlessly to different terrains.

The electric powertrain is paired with a 100 kWh battery, offering robust energy output and an extended range. Our test car is the AWD variant that features an impressive 432 kW of total power output, with a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 4.9 seconds. This makes the Smart #5 not only a capable commuter but also a thrilling ride for enthusiasts. Acceleration is smooth and consistent, making merging onto highways or overtaking slower vehicles a breeze. The customizable regenerative braking system adds versatility, allowing drivers to choose between a traditional coasting feel or energy-efficient single-pedal driving.

On highways, the Smart #5 shines as a capable cruiser. Its aerodynamic design reduces wind noise, while its well-tuned brakes inspire confidence even during sudden stops. The precise steering balances responsiveness and ease, effortlessly making sharp turns and high-speed lane changes.

Regardless of the configuration, the Smart #5 offers three driving modes—energy-saving, comfort, and sport—allowing drivers to select the ideal setting for any scenario. The AWD model also features an all-terrain mode, perfect for off-road adventures. With regenerative braking options that allow for a traditional driving feel or an energy-efficient single-pedal driving experience, the Smart #5 adapts to the driver’s preferences.

Safety and Driver Assistance

The Smart #5 is equipped with the Smart Pilot Assist 3.0, powered by dual Nvidia Drive OrinX autonomous driving chips; the vehicle offers 23 standard safety features, including traffic jam assist, lane change assist, forward and rear collision mitigation, and parking assist. The Smart #5 is also packed with eight airbags, including front, side, and curtain airbags, along with an optional zero-gravity seat cushion airbag for added comfort and safety.

Verdict

The Smart #5 represents a significant step forward for the brand, bridging the gap between urban convenience and outdoor capability. It balances style with utility, offering a spacious interior thanks to its extended wheelbase. Fold-flat rear seats and a roomy cargo area provide ample storage, while the roof rack accommodates outdoor gear like bikes and kayaks. Advanced sensors and a responsive camera system make parking easy, even in tight spaces.

Whether you’re looking for a family car, an adventure-ready SUV, or an eco-friendly commuter, the Smart #5 delivers with style and functionality. It’s not just a larger version of the Smart #1—it’s a reimagined electric SUV designed to meet the diverse needs of modern drivers while staying true to Smart’s legacy of innovation and forward-thinking design.
