Tesla Model Y became the bestselling car in China in 2024

The Tesla Model Y became the bestselling car in China in 2024 by selling 480,309 units in twelve months, according to China EV DataTracker. In contrast with most countries, the Model Y’s sales volume in China increased. In 2025, the recently launched Tesla Model Y “Juniper” can attract even more buyers.

The demand for the Tesla Model Y declined worldwide. For example, according to Automotive Analyst Felipe Munoz (Carindustryanalysis) reports, sales of this crossover declined by 27% in Norway, by 87% in Iceland, and by 31% in Luxembourg.  We can explain it by the aging of the Model Y, which was first launched in 2019. However, Chinese sales of this model increased in China right before the launch of the facelifted “Juniper” variant.

Tesla Model Y is a bestseller in China

Tesla sold 480,309 units of the Model Y in twelve months of 2024, up by 5.24% from 456,394 cars in 2023. It is worth mentioning that the Tesla Model Y one position behind the BYD Qin Plus sedan by the end of 11 months of 2024.

However, the American automaker had a strong finish in December by selling 61,881 units. It is the third high after 69,098 units in November 2022, and 62,169 cars in August 2022. We will remind you that Tesla China sold 93,766 cars in December, the third highest ever.

The rise in sales could be caused by the company’s marketing efforts in the Middle Kingdom in late 2024. For example, Tesla VP Grace Tao shared that Tesla has never been recalled in the past six years, proving to be safe. Other reasons for the sales growth include the launch of the smart summon feature and the launch of the final payment reduction for Model Y in China.

The Model Y placed first in twelve months of 2024 in China. However, the BYD Qin Plus sedan placed second with a sales volume of 480,025 cars, only 284 cars behind. The starting price of the Tesla Model Y was 249,900 yuan (34,100 USD) in 2024.

On January 10, the new Tesla Model Y “Juniper” was launched in China with a price range of 263,500 – 303,500 yuan (39,950 – 41,400 USD). The new model boasts a refreshed exterior, a lower drag of 0.22 Cd, a 100-liter more spacious trunk, and enhanced specs. This vehicle will start deliveries in March 2025 in China. The new Tesla Model Y received 50,000 orders on launch day in China, marking a strong start.
