On November 6, GAC officially launched the Aion RT, its newest pure electric sedan aimed at the mainstream market. Built on the companyโs advanced AEP 3.0 pure electric platform, the Aion RT combines modern design, robust performance, and cutting-edge technology to cater to a wide range of drivers. The vehicle is available in five trims, priced between 119,800 and 165,800 yuan (approximately 16,350โ22,600 USD), similarly priced as the popular Xpeng Mona M03 (see specs). In November, the Aion RT sold over 7,000 units in China.
Our test car is the 650 LiDAR trim, powered by a 165 kW motor and a 68.1 kWh battery for a 650 km range; it features 27 sensors, including a 126-line LiDAR and an NVIDIA Orin-X chip, enabling L2++ driving assistance. Advanced features include map-free navigation, memory parking, blind spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alerts. It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.7 seconds, with energy consumption at 11.9 kWh/100 km. It supports 3C fast charging technology. Recharging the battery from 30% to 80% takes only 18 minutes.
Exterior
The Aion RT embodies GACโs โVelociraptorโ design concept, highlighted by a sleek exterior and an ultra-low drag coefficient of 0.208 Cd. Its dimensionsโ4865 mm in length, 1875 mm in width, and 1520 mm in heightโprovide a well-proportioned body, while the 2775 mm wheelbase ensures a spacious cabin.
Interior
The minimalist cabin emphasizes functionality and comfort. The dashboard integrates a standard 14.6-inch central control screen and an 8.8-inch digital instrument panel. High-quality materials and thoughtful design touches elevate the experience. Practicality is a key focus, with the front seats capable of reclining fully to connect with the rear, forming a โbig bed.โ
The Aion RT has heated and ventilated seats, standard across all trims, enhancing comfort during extreme weather. The cabinโs layout includes air-conditioning vents, wireless charging pads, and ample storage space.
Behind the Wheel
The GAC Aion RT offers a refined driving experience, prioritizing comfort and smoothness over aggressive performance. In urban settings, the sedanโs responsive throttle delivers ample power for quick acceleration, while its linear power delivery ensures a stress-free ride in stop-and-go traffic. Precise steering simplifies maneuvering through tight city streets, and the suspension effectively absorbs bumps, maintaining comfort on uneven roads. On the highway, the Aion RT demonstrates impressive stability, aided by its low 0.208 Cd drag coefficient and well-calibrated chassis, ensuring confidence at higher speeds.
Noise isolation is excellent, with minimal wind and road noise intrusion, while adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist function reliably, reducing fatigue during long drives. The 165 kW motor in the 650 trim emphasizes smooth power delivery rather than outright speed. On winding roads, the Aion RT maintains composure with minimal body roll and a planted feel, although its muted steering feedback highlights its comfort-focused design.
During our test, adaptive cruise and lane-keeping systems are dependable. However, the LiDAR occasionally faltered in tight parking scenarios, suggesting potential software updates are required. The Aion RT is ideal for those seeking a comfortable and balanced daily commuter.
Verdict
The Aion RT competes with rivals like the BYD Qin Plus (see specs), XPeng Mona M03, and even the Tesla Model 3 in size. While some competitors may provide more luxurious interiors or advanced autonomous driving systems, the Aion RTโs emphasis on affordability and functionality makes it an attractive option for cost-conscious buyers.
With a spacious interior, robust driver-assistance features, and advanced technology, the GAC Aion RT is a well-rounded electric sedan. Its focus on practicality and value positions it as a strong contender in the competitive EV market, appealing to modern families and urban commuters.
