BYD to launch 1000V platform with 5C charging in mid-March, report says

BYD’s 1000 V high-voltage platform, which offers ultra-fast charging over 5C, will launch in mid-March, local media reported. BYD will then start implementing 1000V charging on 2025 updates of its models and conduct β€œlarge-scale construction” of ultra-fast charging stations.

Models with 1000V support will be rolled out gradually in the coming months to the high-end models, allowing charging 300 km in 5 minutes, Auto Pixel reports. Compared with the 800V platforms, every additional 100V increases charging power by 25 kW at the same current.

High-voltage platforms reduce the workload on the battery, generating less heat. This improves battery longevity and enables faster charging. They also benefit electric motors, allowing them to achieve higher speeds without increasing size.

The report also revealed that BYD is working on pure electric architecture codenamed BOX to improve energy efficiency and system integration.

The 1000V charging platform will be implemented on BYD’s high-end models, such as the Dynasty series. The report specifically mentions Han L and Tang L, which wereΒ teased in JanuaryΒ and will launch later this month. Those models can be the first to feature BYD’s 1000V charging.

CarNewsChina previously reported that Han L would adopt the 945V high-voltage system and support dual-gun DC charging.Β Since Tang L has the same powertrain, the same goes for this model.

Moreover, spy shots of BYD’s supercharging station were spotted in China, featuring a voltage exceeding 1000V and a 6C charging rate.

However, BYD is not stopping at 1000V charging. In November, leaked information showed that BYD is working on theΒ world’s fastest battery for electric construction machinery. It will feature a 1500V high-voltage platform, 400A max current, up to 600 kW charging power, over 7000 life cycles, and a maximum capacity of 2,500 kWh. The battery will have lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry.

BYD sold 614,679 vehicles globally in January + February, up 90% from 322,767 units year-over-year.

Editor’s comment

BYD cars weren’t known for their fast charging capabilities, and especially in Europe, many users complained about the slow charging of BYD Atto 3 or Dolphin. BYD now wants to change it, at least for its high-end models. In China, the competition is obvious – Xiaomi SU7 supports 900V charging, Nio has its Nio ET9 flagship on the 900V platform, as well as its entry-level Onvo L60. Zeekr has 001 FR with 800V charging or Zeekr 7X which recently got into headlines as the fastest charging EV.
