new “boxy” SUV set to debut at Shanghai Auto Show

MG, operating under SAIC, has officially announced the upcoming launch of its all-new “boxy” SUV, the MG Cyber X, which will make its global debut at the Shanghai Auto Show. The company describes the Cyber X as a “groundbreaking innovation” in MG’s history.

The pictures show that the Cyber X adopts a modern “boxy” silhouette with rounded edges, blending rugged SUV aesthetics with urban sophistication. The design avoids a purely off-road look, favouring a sleek, tech-forward approach aimed at younger consumers. Key highlights include full-width LED light bars at the front and rear, split-type headlights, illuminated MG badging, hidden door handles, and roof rails for a clean, aerodynamic profile. While powertrain details remain under wraps, the closed-off grille suggests the Cyber X will likely be an electric or hybrid model.

The Cyber X is part of MG’s aggressive two-year product plan, which includes eight new models across sports cars, sedans, and SUVs. Among these is the 2026 MG Cyberster, an upgraded roadster featuring new colours, enhanced storage, and performance tweaks. The next-generation MG4 EV is slated for 2025, followed by two new sedans in 2026 with CTB (Cell-to-Body) battery integration. Additionally, two more SUV models are planned by 2026, further expanding MG’s lineup.

The company’s new E3 Architecture, developed by SAIC, is a modular EV platform capable of supporting everything from compact cars to luxury vehicles. Semi-solid-state batteries for mass production promise higher energy density and faster charging. In a strategic partnership, MG will be the first brand to integrate OPPO’s smart connectivity, enabling phone-car integration. The Cyber X is also expected to feature advanced AI and autonomous driving capabilities, powered by Horizon Robotics’ J6 high-performance chip based on Momenta’s autonomous driving solutions.

In the first quarter of 2025, the brand sold 25,839 units, marking a 13.1% year-over-year increase, with March alone exceeding 10,000 units—an 82.6% surge. The company is on track to become the first Chinese automaker to surpass 3 million overseas sales, having already sold 24.34 million units in Europe in 2024. To support this growth, MG plans to expand its retail network, adding 150 new stores in 2025, bringing its total number of locations in China to 400.
